Marina Barrage

The Marina Barrage is a dam built across the 350m wide Marina Channel to keep out seawater. It forms Singapore’s first reservoir in the city. With the Barrage in place, the Marina Basin will turn into a body of fresh water in about 2 years, which will in turn be treated using advanced membrane technology to make it fit for consumption. Aside from adding to Singapore existing pool of water source, the Marina Barrage has been designed to be a complex flood control system as well as a lifestyle hub. As the water level in the barrage will be kept level at all times, it will be most suitable for sports activities such as dragonboating, kayaking and windsurfing.
Children love the interactive showcase at the marina barrage where they get to add features and animate the activities in their dream waterfront home. The colourful museum also traces Singapore’s journey to getting water independence through the years. A working to-scale miniature Marina Barrage also demonstrates how the actual barrage works at high and low tides, complete with button activated rainfall. The shallow wading pools are a great hit with kids and adults alike on a hot day. The visually stunning Marina Barrage is a favourite for many amateur photographers. Taken from the correct angle, you get a nicely framed picture of the Singapore Flyer.
