Basic Child Proofing Advice

Everyone has a safety horror story to share.

Tim was only about 6mths old or so, when the incident happened.  He was lying on the bed, and had just learnt to roll over. THUD! Tim rolled off the bed and fell onto the parquet flooring.

Being a first-time parent, we were panicky and frantic with worry.  After hurrying to the A&E Ward at the Kandang Kerbau Hospital, the doctor monitored Tim for any possible delayed symptom of head trauma and subsequent possibility of having fever.  Thank goodness, he was alright.

Since then, we have realized the importance of Child Proofing our own home.  Here’s why:

Why is Childproofing Important?

Among the other decisions that you will need to make, there is this aspect of making your house a safe haven for your baby. While you can create a playpen for the child, you cannot keep him there all the time. It is also not good for the growth of the child to be confined in one place all the time. So what you really need to think about is how you can ensure a safe environment while allowing for exploration and satisfaction of curiosity.

Inquisitive hands and legs will go all places where they can. These little ones do not understand the things that can cause harm to them and you surely do not want them to learn this by experience especially when some things can be very dangerous for the little ones. Also, almost everything that the baby sees is a new thing for him and there is a curiosity to see and check out the new object. Colorful and shiny objects are far more attractive and should be addressed too.

Basic ChildProofing Advice

The first rule of childproofing is to look at the world from the child’s perspective and understand what he sees when he looks at various objects. Understand that the world view of your child is at the two feet level and that stuff lying on low tables and chairs and cords hanging just above the head are things that will get attacked immediately. Any colorful thing is likely to attract more attention than boring browns irrespective of whether they are large, sharp or pointed. All small objects should be removed from the floor and care should be taken to ensure that new ones do not appear every day. Browsing through the childproofing section at those DIY stores or major departmental stores, can help you get ideas about the things that you need to do to keep your child safe.

If you are worried about the safety of your child, then you should be ready to spend some money on childproofing gates, childproofing cabinet latches, door knob covers, electric switch covers, carpet padding and more. A great idea is to create a large area in the house that is devoid of too much furniture so that your child can play there without any harm.
