A family that plays together, stays together

Timothy just turned 2 years old last week, and I decided to do something special for his birthday – 3D car cake.

Being a first-timer, I was totally clueless about what “frosting” is all about. But I still went ahead to try with the help of many angels I had approached. I went on to practice 2 weeks before my son’s birthday, and the result? Well, the frosting was messy due to the humidity in the air, so it melts rather easily as we tried to coat the entire cake with icing.  The car was also not shaped properly, looking like a hearse.

Lucky it was only a practice session.

On the eve of Tim’s birthday, I did it again. This time, phew! It was successful, well, at least it was a success to me and my husband.  We started working around 10pm after Tim had gone to bed.

My husband, Ben, was the greatest angel. Although he kept grumbling that I should just ordered the cake instead of going through the hassle, he worked with me to get the cake completed.  Well, I must say, that, decorating this cake or any other cakes is a tedious job. One needs to have passion and patience to complete it beautifully. For us, we did it out of love for our son who is so crazy over car! Just give him any car and that will keep him occupied. ;-)

The imperfect car, but it's perfect to me.

My point of being so hands-on in decorating the cake is this: “As imperfect as it seems, I wish to whip up something that he loves, on his special day, and that it is something worth remembering for life, and even talk and laugh over it when he grows up.”

Even up till today, Ben still talks and laughs over his first birthday cake. His mum baked his cake but the cake couldn’t come out from the pan! Well, it was hilarious that everyone ended up eating the cake directly from the pan. This is a similar bondage that I am trying to achieve.

During the party itself, Tim excitedly screamed aloud at the sight of the 2 beautiful car cakes, “Blue car! Red car!” At that moment, both Ben and I felt so proud over our achievement and patience.

Tim crying out for his car

After the cake cutting and birthday cheer, Tim became so heartbroken when he saw his car cake had ‘gone into the scrap yard’. He was trying to save his cars and yelled ‘CARRRRRR’ into my ears, and the poor boy was so closed to tears…I never realized he would take it so hard.

So, should I try again next year? Probably so…..

Haa.. good try! I believe Tim will thank you for your effort if he knows how to speak.. Nvm, when he looks back in future, sure he would love you more. ;)
